Gateway gets snazzy with glowing touchpads on EC39C and ID49C08u laptops

Who needs a backlit keyboard when you have a backlit touchpad? Okay, that’s really a rhetorical question, but Gateway’s newest 13.3-inch EC339C and 14-inch ID49C08u do in fact have glowing blue touchpads. The pad itself only lights up when you put your finger to it, and like HP’s ClickPads have integrated mouse buttons. The rest of the thin and light machines are equally as impressive — they have nabbed Acer’s chiclet style keyboard and have that dedicated social networking key that Gateway seems to be adding to many of its systems. The key, which may very well have the cutest logo of all time stamped upon it, launched a social networking widget that allows for adding Facebook, YouTube and Flickr feeds to a timeline. Internally, the EC39C packs a Core i5 ULV processor and NVIDIA Optimus for switching between the GeForce 310 GPU and Intel’s integrated HD graphics. The ID49C08u has a standard voltage Core i5, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive and an onboard optical drive. Your guess is as good as ours about availability and pricing, but we did grab you some nice hands-on shots and a video of that crazy touchpad after the break. In 1997, Hypersonic joined the likes of Voodoo , AlienWare and Falcon Northwest in the gamble that gamers would buy what were then gut-wrenchingly expensive (think $10,000) custom PCs. Ten years later, it was gobbled up by memory manufacturer OCZ , and soon came to our attention for selling a chic, tiny, but somehow nicely specced 12.1-inch laptop. Today, the company is no more. The Hypersonic website reads that the firm is no longer accepting orders, and Techgage — speaking to OCZ’s chief marketing office Alex Mei — reports that while OCZ will honor all warranties, the company is ceasing marketing and sales support for the Hypersonic brand. Sad, yes, but at least it’s one fewer temptation to lure us extreme gamers into bankruptcy. Astro pleads for street cred with $150 A30 Cross-Gaming headset

Ah, Astro Gaming . It’s been awhile , hasn’t it? After going on a year-long hiatus from crafting new hardware, the company is hitting back with an all-new headset based around the same DNA found in its A40 . Rather than cranking out yet another pair of mic-infused headphones that do users little good outside of the LAN party setting, the A30 Cross-Gaming actually boasts a street-style design that enables them to double as vanilla headphones. The boom mic is removable (though an in-line mic allows for communication in any situation), and you’ll find interchangeable speaker tags if you’re scouting a way to “be yourself.” It’s up for order today at $149.95, but if you’re looking to pick up a Dolby-powered Astro MixAmp — which is said to “seamlessly blend voice and game sounds” — you’ll be looking at a grand total of $229.95. TiVo Premiere hands-on (update: video!)

We’ve gotten our first look at the new TiVo Premiere interface, and it sure is shiny. You sure wouldn’t see that it’s running in Flash at first blush, since the UI is quite responsive and “native” feeling, with live streams of video playing without a hitch. The biggest hint that there’s a big amount of reliance on the internet is the fact that the choked connection here was causing thumbnails and even some UI icons to take a little while to pop in. The rep we spoke with said that TiVo is still considering what elements exactly they’ll be caching. The new ways to find and promote relevant content are pretty intuitive and helpful. Everything is “connected,” so it’s easy to start from a category like the “Oscars” or an actor like “Jack McBrayer” and end up on the other end of the universe, IMDB style. There’s a certain amount of dumbing down, to be sure, and nothing’s going to beat your laptop for speed or comprehensiveness in bopping around this sort of information. Although, TiVo helps out a bit in this department with the optional QWERTY remote. Unfortunately, while we appreciate the full QWERTY input, the sliding mechanism is utterly cheap and shoddy — we’re assured that it’s a couple revisions away from a final design, and we certainly hope so! The QWERTY buttons themselves are rubbery and not very clicky, but perhaps they’ll helped along as well by this promised revision. Update: We’ve got video. It can be found after the break, though unfortunately you can’t hear a single thing our helpful guide says because she’s drowned out by the “fist pumping” good times of the party that TiVo’s event devolved into. Japanese ‘age prediction machine’ is really just a mosquito tone test

And this, folks, is yet another reason why the Land of the Rising Sun is truly one of the world’s greatest places. Japan, which is famous for having ridiculously polite citizens and some of the zaniest toys known to man, has just delivered its latest gem: the Age Prediction Machine. As you might expect, the device simply emits the now-famed ” mosquito tone ,” which is an exceptionally high pitched frequency that can’t typically be heard by older humans. Depending on the intensity of the sound, you’re able to determine where the cutoff is between hearing it and not, thus discovering the age of whoever would be gullible enough to stand around and actually engage in this sort of lunacy. But seriously, don’t use this the day before your mother’s birthday — just ask pops which number she’s about to celebrate / not celebrate, cool? Facebook Flirts Beware: Study Shows Women Aren’t Amused

welcome to s.ourced.com A quarter of women would dump their boyfriend for flirting with other web users on social networks such as Facebook , says MyVoucherCodes . Research by the discount code website revealed that just 19 percent of men would ditch their girlfriend for the same crime. Furthermore, 22 percent of women would dump a man for following TV presenter Vernon Kay’s lead and sending sexually explicit messages to other women on microblogging service Twitter . Only 17 percent of men said it would do the same. When it comes to sending a saucy text message, 71 percent of Brits admitted this qualified as cheating. However, MyVoucherCodes revealed Brits think flirting over e-mail is worse than sending saucy text messages or explicit messages of Twitter. A quarter of women said they’d dump a boyfriend for sending saucy emails to a colleague, while a third of men would dump a woman for the same offence. Furthermore, 10 percent of men said they suspected their partner was flirting with a male colleague on email, but only a quarter found this to be true. “I’m not too sure why flirting by emails is considered more of a threat than via social networking or text,” said Mark Pearson, managing director of MyVoucherCodes.co.uk “Social networking and texts it can seem more open and obvious, while emails tend to be more personal. I think that with work emails, there may be a slightly higher sense of paranoia as there is that whole issue around people cheating with work colleagues.” Broadband speed test Internet & broadband news See also: 20% of divorces mention Facebook Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry . Fashionable Sony Camera Is as Tough as Nails

welcome to s.ourced.com Sony today announced two additions to its 2010 Cyber-shot camera lineup, both of which should be on display at the PMA 2010 show in Anaheim, California, later this week. The Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 is a slim, fashionable camera that’s built to withstand shock, ice, dust, and water. The Cyber-shot DSC-H55 is a younger sibling to the 10X-optical-zoom Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V , announced earlier this year. Both cameras are slated for availability in April. Cyber-shot TX5: A Ruggedized Camera With Style The Cyber-shot TX5 measures less than 0.75 inch thick, and although it looks just like Sony’s fashionable Cyber-shot TX1 , Cyber-shot TX7 , and Cyber-shot T90 , it’s built for sheer resilience. The touchscreen-operated TX5 is waterproof down to 10 feet underwater, shockproof to drops as far as 5 feet, freezeproof to 14 degrees Fahrenheit, and dustproof. Sony says that the camera’s 3-inch touchscreen is operable on both dry land and underwater (a claim we’re excited to test out). Its optically stabilized wide-angle lens has a 4X optical zoom range (25mm to 100mm). Like the cameras Sony announced at CES 2010, the TX5 will also handle both SD/SDHC and Memory Stick storage cards. Key features include an enhanced version of the Sweep Panorama mode found in several of Sony’s recent cameras; with the camera in this mode, the user can press the shutter button, pan from side to side, and create an instant panoramic image. This is definitely another feature that we want to test underwater. The 10-megapixel TX5 also shoots 720p high-definition video, offers in-camera features such as Smile Shutter and a high dynamic range mode, and has a low-light-optimized Exmor R CMOS sensor. All of that makes the TX5 an enticing option for anyone seeking a point-and-shoot that they can use on a day-to-day basis as well as in more extreme settings. The $350 Cyber-shot DSC-TX5 will come in black, silver, red, green, and pink. Cyber-shot H55: 10X Optical Zoom on a Budget The new Cyber-shot DSC-H55 offers much of the same high-end hardware as the Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V announced at CES , but it lacks that model’s GPS/ TransferJet connectivity and CMOS sensor. Despite measuring less than an inch deep, the 14-megapixel H55 serves up an optically stabilized 10X-optical-zoom lens that reaches from 25mm wide-angle to 250mm telephoto. Instead of the low-light-optimized CMOS sensor found in the HX5V, the H55 has a 0.43-inch CCD sensor to go along with its high-zoom G Lens. Sweep Panorama mode, 720p high-definition video recording, a 3-inch-diagonal LCD screen, and SD/SDHC compatibility (in addition to Memory Stick) are all in the mix, as well. The Cyber-shot DSC-H55 will be available in black or silver for $250. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry . Available tools: PDF Newspaper , Full Text RSS , Term Extraction .
