Pentax makes all-weather Optio W90 and superzoom X90 official
February 25th, 2010 by staffPentax is going for broke with its take on the rugged camera, the W90 , which is unlikely to ever be confused for a svelte and stylish point-and-shoot. What it loses in looks, it gains in usability, however, as the 12.1 megapixel shooter can withstand shocks from a height of four feet, go nearly 20 feet under water, and withstand temperatures as slow as -10 degrees Celsius. The dustproofing is just topping on that rugged cake, though it still offers things like 720p / 30fps video recording and 5x optical zoom that are now considered standard camera specs. There are also three forms of shake reduction: one is post-processing of affected images, the second is by automatically increasing the ISO in low light conditions, and the third is the use of “exclusive software” during movie mode. We can’t say any one of those will be as good as a well-implemented optical image stabilization, but at least they’re there and might offer some assistance. As to the X90, it joins a growing band of 26x and above optical superzoomers , while adding the W90’s 720p video mode and image stabilizers plus its own sensor-shift stabilizer for good measure. Both shooters are expected in April, priced at $330 for the W90 and $400 for X90, though we’ve noticed the former will show up a month earlier in the UK with a £270 ($417) price tag. Olympus PEN E-PL1 Micro Four Thirds camera now shipping for $600
February 24th, 2010 by staffNext month? Psshh. For those hankering for a slice of that oh-so-tempting Micro Four Thirds pie, Olympus’ new and improved PEN E-PL1 is now shipping (in blue and gold, anyway) from Amazon. If you’ll recall, the company told us that it wouldn’t be available until March when it launched three weeks ago, but hey, you won’t find us kvetching about early availability. For those who’ve forgotten, this compact camera touts the same 12.3 megapixel image sensor as the E-30 and E-620 , and the $599.99 asking price also nets you a 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 Zuiko zoom lens. Good luck resisting. [Thanks, Ron ] Olympus PEN E-PL1 Micro Four Thirds camera now shipping for $600 originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 24 Feb 2010 10:22:00 EST. Five Digital Cameras That Are Well Connected
February 22nd, 2010 by adminwelcome to s.ourced.com At CES 2010 , Sony introduced the Cyber-shot DSC-HX5V. It has TransferJet technology, which allows for wireless image transfers between compatible devices held about 1 inch apart (other manufacturers on board with TransferJet include Canon, Casio, Kodak, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, and Samsung). The Cyber-shot HX5V offers not only GPS-enabled geotagging but also an internal compass and automatic time-zone updates. It also has a 10X optical zoom and features a high dynamic range (HDR) mode , which overlays photos taken in rapid succession with different exposure settings. Sony Unveils Small, Stylish Interchangeable-Lens Concept Camera
February 21st, 2010 by adminwelcome to s.ourced.com Anaheim, Calif. (IDG) — Today at PMA 2010, Sony unveiled a concept model of a compact interchangeable-lens camera with an APS-C sized sensor (24mm x 16mm). The upcoming cameras share the same Alpha branding as the company’s DSLR line and are slated for availability later this year. See a slideshow of Sony’s announcement and first peeks of the new cameras. Few details about the finished product were released during the unveiling, but we do know it will use Sony’s new Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and be able to shoot 1080p high-definition video in AVCHD format. No pricing or availability has been announced for the new Sony compact cameras, nor have details about its lens compatibility. The company says that the camera is designed to offer DSLR-like image quality in a more-compact package. Samsung’s NX10 , announced earlier this year at CES, also offers an APS-C sized sensor, but the Sony prototypes unveiled today look much smaller in size. The concept model was showcased in three stylish camera-body colors: silver, red and blue. Like the NX10 and the Micro Four-Thirds system cameras made by Olympus and Panasonic , Sony’s concept camera lacks the internal mirror box found in traditional DSLR cameras. That allows the camera to be much more compact than a DSLR, but also means that it doesn’t have a through-the-lens optical viewfinder; Sony’s concept camera has a large LCD on the back of the camera that serves as its only viewfinder. Sony does have a few unique in-camera features that would make this model an enticing option, such as its one-touch Sweep Panorama mode, Handheld Twilight mode (which blends up to six images together to create a noise-free low-light image), and Advanced Scene Recognition mode (which takes two photos in rapid succession with and without the flash). We’ll post more about Sony’s new compact interchangeable-lens camera as soon as we get more information. In the meantime, stay tuned for more camera news from the PMA 2010 show in Anaheim.
